Plan of Action for Wednesday the 21st of April 2010, Vesak 2010 youth gathering at 8PM at Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, 125 Homestead Road, Berwick:

1. Taking of five precepts with the Maha-Sangha.

2. Self-introduction and passing around attendance roll for contact details.

3. Discussion of youth food stall:

We need to decide on about four days leading up to Vesak where we can meet up and make and freeze short-eats and other foods for frying the day before Vesak. For example rolls, cutlets, etc can be made on these four days leading up to Vesak and frozen. On the Vesak days when when this food is needed, they can be thawed, fried and served. We also need to start a collection of food from our family and friends for the Vesak days in addition to the food that we are making. Lastly we need to roster and allocate people for stall.

4. Discussion of pahan pujava for the 2600 Buddha-jayanti:

There will be a pahan-pujava (offering of lights) starting in this year's Vesak and going onwards till next Vesak in 2011, which is when the 2600 Buddha-jayanti is (2600 years since the Enlightenment of the Lord Buddha). What we intend to do is to light 250 lamps every poya day, starting this Vesak poya and finishing in Vesak 2011 poya so as to lamp a total of 2600+ lamps (12 x 250 = 3000). Every poya someone can take responsibility for it and involve others to help them to light the 250+ lamps.

5. Possible Muchalinda-naga display construction and/or Vesak play.

6. Any other ideas.

Dear youths and parents,

As you may know Vesak celebrations will be held towards the end of May this year. Before that we would like to call all interested youths to gather this Wednesday the 21st of April at 8PM at Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, 125 Homestead Road, Berwick to discuss some ideas about what we can do and how we can contribute to Vesak this year as youths.

We already have a few ideas, but they would not be complete without your ideas as well. By combining and merging them, we can truly make 2010 a Vesak to remember! So if you are interested in making a contribution and making Vesak this year a success, please do come along this Wednesday at 8PM to the Berwick temple.

The committee elders have proposed the following idea for youths to do as a support activity for the main fund raising activities during Vesak such as the hopper stalls. They would like the youths to get together and do a short 5-10 minute play. Such a play can keep the Vesak visitors to the temple entertained/occupied while they wait to receive food.

The hell scenario that was discussed earlier can be used for such a short play (FYI the initial hell project did not go any further due to lack of interest - only 2 people and myself came for the second Hell project meeting in January). The idea for these short plays is to act out how a person breaks the five precepts and then ends up going to hell - to be acted out on a mini stage quickly and simply put together using a tent, temporary platform and simple lighting. Such a play would only need about 5 people at the most, a simple script and a few simple props. So this is a project that can be organized more quickly than other plays. Also not everyone needs to get on the stage, you can also be part of the team that makes props, is back stage, etc.

I went to the dayaka meeting last night where this was proposed so I am relaying it back to the youth. If someone would like to get people together and drive this project forward please get in contact with the temple on 9702 6275 and indicate your interest. I can help you to a limited extent and guide you in relation to finding Buddhist background material on the topic of hell if required (SMS/call 0410 340 399 or email me directly on rwijayaratne@... ).

It has been decided to postpone the youth sil which was orginially scheduled to occur on this Sunday (8th of Feb) to the the following Sunday the 15th of Februay.

The reason for this change is due a special guest, an English speaking visting monk from Sri Lanka, being available to conduct the program on the 15th.

Hello everyone,

We have organized a Dhamma talk especially for the younger audience in English with Pitigala Gunaratana Thero (he departs for Sri Lanka in early January 2009). Such a valuable talk by a master of the Dhamma and meditation is a very rare opportunity not to be missed. There is enough interest for us to go ahead despite the Venerable's tight schedule and high demand for his sermons.

We have CONFIRMED the final date and time for the talk as Friday the 2nd of January at 8PM at the Berwick temple (Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, 125 Homestead Road, Berwick. Melways: 110 H12). It would be better if you could come at 7PM for the Buddha puja and chanting to calm and clear the mind before the talk.
